Crystal O’Brien Appointed to California Law Revision Commission

Attorney Crystal Miller-O’Brien of Los Angeles has been elected Chairperson of the California Law Revision Commission. Attorney Xochitl Carrion, of San Francisco, has been elected as the new Vice-Chairperson. The terms for both offices will end on September 1, 2012.

The Law Revision Commission is a state agency responsible for studying problem areas in California law and recommending needed reforms to the Governor and Legislature. The Commission’s current workload includes work on community redevelopment law, charter schools, the Uniform Adult Guardianship and Protective Proceedings Jurisdiction Act, and regulation of commercial subdivisions.

Crystal Miller-O’Brien, the new Chairperson, was appointed to the Commission in 2011. She is a graduate of Oberlin College and received her Juris Doctor degree from the Willamette University College of Law. Ms. Miller-O’Brien has served as corporate counsel for Medical Management Consultants, Inc. since 2006. She was an associate for Anderson McPharlin and Connors LLP from 2005 to 2006, for Robie and Matthai PC from 2003 to 2005 and for Bullivant Houser Bailey PC from 2002 to 2003. Miller-O’Brien has served on the board of directors to the California Conference of Bar Associations since 2009. She is a member of the Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles and the National Association of Women Business Owners.

Xochitl Carrion, the new Vice-Chairperson, was appointed to the Commission in 2011. She is a graduate of the University of California at Los Angeles and received her Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Hastings College of Law. Ms. Carrion has been an attorney for Goldfarb and Lipman LLP since 2007. She is a member of the California La Raza Lawyers Association and the San Francisco La Raza Association.

The California Law Revision Commission is a 3 year term that requires appointees to take an Oath of Office as a State Official. It is required to meet monthly in Sacramento and join 6 others to study court opinions, legislative proposals, and the current state of the law to provide the Legislature and the Governor with guidance regarding how to make revisions to California law.
